Chapter Ten
Brandon stirred a bit and then woke with a start.
âElanore?â he cried out, once realizing where he was. She was still asleep, her hand still in his. âOh baby, Iâm here. I never left your side.â He mumbled, kissing her hand and fingers. Just then, he felt a squeeze, ever so slightly, on his hand, in response.
âElanore!? LEE!!â he shouted.
A nurse rushed in and glared at Brandon, while placing her hands on her hips.
âWhatâs all the commotion?â she asked.
âShe just held my hand tighter!â he exclaimed. âWell thatâs great, but why are you screaming?â the nurse asked, in a huff. Brandon stared at her. She was the type of woman he might have once went after. Perfectly evened makeup, a jet black mascara coated on store bought eyelashes. Decent body but she had a trashy air about her. Her fingernails were obviously fake as they were unnaturally long and a bright neon orange color. She smacked gum loudly as she continued staring back at him, looking annoyed to be there. It must be a phase for middle aged women out here, he thought.
âI thoughtâ¦â he trailed.
âShe was awake a few hours ago, Mister.â The nurse replied as she snapped a small bubble.
âWhat!?â he asked, almost screaming now.
The nurse rolled her eyes and hurried out of the room when she heard the doctor calling for help in the room next to Leeâs. Brandon turned to Elanore and raised his hand to her hair. Stroking her head with one hand and holding her hand with his other, he spoke to her.
âHoney, wake up. Please. Itâs me, Brandon. Gail and Patrick are on their way. Isnât that crazy? You wanted so badly for them to meet but kept putting off mentioning it, because of how upset Gail was over that house. Yet, now they are fully dating. Isnât that wonderful?â He figured that rambling about all of this gossip related stuff would stir her, if nothing else. Elanore lived for this. He saw her eyelashes flutter slightly and decided to continue.
âYep, they were holding hands and everything. I think I even heard him call her baby. Who knew, huh?â he continued.
Elanore stirred a bit and then groaned.
âBrandon?â she said in the quietest of voices, as though speaking actually hurt her, physically.
âELANORE!â he shouted, tears flowing freely down his cheeks.
He noticed her wince at the volume of his voice and he quickly apologized.
âBaby, Iâm so sorry. Honey, Iâve been so worried!â
âThirsty.â She managed to whisper. Brandon sprung from the uncomfortable chair and into the hallway. He glanced around and hurried to the patient information counter. âCan my fiancé have a cup of water?â he asked in a very loud voice.
Nurse plastic glanced at him and rolled her eyes.
âIâll have to ask the doctor if thatâs okay.â She replied, filing away at her false nails.
âThen ask.â Brandon growled.
The nurse raised her eyes and tossed the file onto the counter. She hurried away and Brandon hurried back into the room. âThey are checking to see if they can give you something to drink.
